My Musings Season 2006/2007 (commencing Feb 13
2007)
7 May
Not with a bang, but a
whimper. Burnley's season has ended in disappointing fashion. It's never good to
lose at home and especially not when the club has made an appeal to the fans to
make it a special day "Make it Claret and You!" The gate of 12,830 was quite
good for a match that had no importance for either side. If I'd been there I
would have felt let down as it appears the players didn't make much of an
effort. The positive goal difference was a plus (groan) but we failed to score
enough goals away from home. Goodbye Southend, Luton and Leeds (Good job they
got their 10 point deduction this season or they might have been on their way to
the bottom tier next season). Welcome to Sunny Scunny and Bristol City. I
will be watching the play off results with
interest.

I thought I'd watch both games before commenting. They were great
entertainment. Obviously coming back from 2 down to beat the Baggies was the
best and made for great TV but the match against RK Black Cats did the lads
credit too. Both matches were more entertaining than a lot of Premiership stuff
I've watched this season. 10 goals and some pearlers too. If we'd played like
that all season we'd be in the top 3. Even the dubious refereeing didn't spoil
the Sunderland game. For a spell we looked the better side but only for a spell!
Credit to Sunderland, they were skillful and pacey and worthy of their win.
My only disappointment was in watching Ade not at his best, he's just a bit off
the pace at the moment but hopefully next season he will be the force he was
before. He's still a strong player tho! Anyways, last match a week on Sunday,
let's hope we finish on a high and stuff Coventry.
19 April
Just got back from Bulgaria so I didn't
know the results of the last 2 games until I checked yesterday. 9 points clear,
+4 goal difference and 3 games left. Well we're safe now (unless the teams below
us win all their games and score a hatful of goals whilst we lose all ours). Oh
me of little faith, but then I'm always a pessimist. Shame we didn't get a
result against Leeds, what is it with Burnley when playing against poor sides?
Losing to the bottom clubs is what caused our relegation worries in the first
place, Barnsley, Hull, QPR, Southend and now Leeds, plus the draw against Luton.
Looking at the run-ins none of the bottom teams have it easy but it looks like
it will be a close run thing between Hull and Leeds. Leicester and Barnsley are
the only 2 bottom teams to have a '6 pointer' which could see either side drop
into the relegation battle on the final day. It all looks very interesting and
I'm glad we're out of it! I'm looking forward to the 2 games on Sky, it'll be
good to see the lads actually play. Come on you Clarets!
9 April
Harold Wilson said 'A week is a long time
in politics'. Well 6 days is even longer in football! Relegation to
resurrection, sadness to gladness and crapiness to happyness (poetic license!).
We've gone from being the worst form team in the division to the best; 3
games, 9 points, for 7, against 0. Somebody tell Preston they don't have to keep
losing (North End sunk by Southend) as we wont be relegated despite their feeble
efforts. Leeds's position still looking dodgy. No one is safe these days - Shef
W., Notts F., the Wombles (aka Milton Keynes Dons - a football
travesty!)

Just going out
to celebrate! This is Burnley all over, we can't beat the bottom club at home
then we go to second place Birmingham a week later and do the business. Back to
back wins, when did that last happen? Hang on I'll check........Last game in
October and first in November! Just before the rot set in. We're now 3 games
undefeated and 7 points clear. Shame about Preston again and I notice Leeds have
edged out of the dropzone.

Whoohoo, they did it!!!!!!!!! I watched Liverpool on Greek
satellite last night and at half time got the BFC score. I couldn't believe it,
3-0 the other way would have seemed more likely. We're now 6 points
clear. Hopefully confidence is restored and we will give Birmingham a run
for their money. 4 goals in one game and Plymouth missed a penalty. We never
miss penalties because they are never awarded in our favour! I notice Preston
are doing their best to keep the pressure on us, letting Leeds and QPR win.
Who cares, we now have a 2 match unbeaten run!
2 Apr
Nul points against the bottom club Luton, not
even a goal to make things interesting. Hull have leapfrogged us but luckily
we move 3 points clear even though Leeds won. Plymouth (H) tomorrow
then 2 very hard games next holiday weekend - Birmingham (A) and Cardiff (H). 1
goal in our last 6 games. It's not looking good. Is anyone reading this? What's
all this about new colours for next season? Must have been an April Fool thing
surely! We are not lucky in green (we're not much luckier in claret and blue at
the moment tho'!)

Another defeat away at Preston and now 2 points above the
drop zone. It is difficult to see where we are going to get any points at the
moment. And as for my conversion to Rugby Union, another disappointment there.
At least it cheered up a Welsh landlord here (Ian at Hellas bar). Congrats
Scotland on the wooden spoon, at least you won something! A free weekend next
week, let's see England beat Israel and Andorra, I need something to
cheer.
14 Mar
Sunk at Sahf-end!
This was a must win. We now have the worst form in the division and are sure
relegation candidates. I think I may convert to Rugby Union after watching
England grind out a deserved win against France. Being a BFC supporter is so
depressing 90 percent of the time!

16 league and cup games without a win (thank god for Leeds or it
would have been 20!). On a more positive note 2 games without defeat. We
must win at Southend or we're doomed, doomed I tell you! Congrats to Ade on his
first league goal, let's see more.
Feb 25
A point
away from home and didn't concede, good enough. (England's rugby 'performance'
was poor tho'). Can we beat
Crystal Palace next Sat? We're still moving closer to the bottom and Steve C
isn't worried; I am!!
Feb 20.
Bugger!! I had a big hunch we'd win this after our 2nd half
fightback at Wolves. (The last big hunch fell off Notre Dame cathedral - should
have known better.) At least we scored the only goal. BFC 0- 1 Walkers Crisps.
Could be worst, hi Leeds fans :-).
Feb 18 2007
I
didn't expect anything at Wolves and the Clarets didn't disappoint! However
being fair it sounded like we deserved a point, Wolves fading in the 2nd half as
we powered forward (also 2 penalty appeals by BFC being turned down - nothing
surprising there). Roll on Tuesday and Leicester.
Feb 13 2007
The internet and satellite TV have a lot
to answer for, they allow me to maintain my "interest" in the Clarets. 2006/2007
seems to be a typical season for BFC supporters. It started with so much
promise, a heady second position way back in October, Manager of the Month award
then whammo, normal service is resumed. It's freefall again, reminiscent of the
Chris Waddle/Glen Roeder era. The manager has made some good signings, Andy
Gray is back in contention so what is wrong? It's the usual confidence thing
that afflicts footballers, something akin to the lucky underpants
syndrome!
