Fire on Oxa

The services seemed to have the fire under
control as it went dark but just after midnight it flared up again as can be
seen in the last 2 photos. The fire managed to cross the Elounda/Agios Nikolaos
road leading to mass evacuation of the hotels and residents on the lower slopes.
However although the fire left a blackened landscape there was little damage to
property and no lives lost due to the careful targetting of fire fighting
resources.
(we got a phone call at 1am, just after we had gone to bed. Peter
and Gill informed us they had been evacuated and asked if they could come to our
house. When Christine said yes there was a knock on the door, it was P & G
with 2 cats, 2 passports and a bottle of whisky!!)
